      My mother has one of these, and her brown sugar is always soft, so I bought myself one too. Soaked it as directed and placed it in a container with some very hard brown sugar. Lo and behold, next time I opened the container, the sugar was all soft and usable again! Saved me from having to throw it away and waste money. One caveat - some sugar did stick to the bottom of it and had to be pried off. Small price to pay, in my opinion, for nice soft brown sugar.

      it is suppose to be soaked in water for 15 min and than dryed off and put in brown sugar. I find the sugar get hard faster if you don't keep soaking it.

              I added the soaked brown sugar preserver in water as directed and placed the dampened off disk in brown sugar that was at least 8 years old and so hard you had to use a hammer to break off chunks. The next morning the brown sugar was just like out of a fresh bag. This fat old Grandpa was very impressed.

                    This, when used as directed (meaning soak it in water overnight then pat off the extra water before putting it in the bag of brown sugar) will take rock hard brown sugar and make it moist again, and if the sugar is already moist will keep it that way - but be sure to seal the sugar in an airtight bag. I had a 1 1/2 lb bag that took two 'treatments' and it's now fresh again, (had to re-wet the disc because the clay disc did dry out - the moisture transfers from it into the sugar, but then I had a lot of very dry sugar that needed to be treated).
